Jean Marie Herzel painted all 78 cards in watercolor, interpreting the full Major and Minor Arcana through the living world of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Each card draws on a carefully chosen selection of plants, birds, insects, reptiles, and gemstones, with the symbolism of each natural element traced through Native American, Celtic, and Eastern and Western philosophical traditions. The Magician card, for instance, features a Merlin Falcon, an Amanita mushroom, Western Sword Fern, and an Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly, each chosen because it reflects an aspect of what the Magician means in tarot.
