The Fifth Spirit Tarot was illustrated by Charlie Claire Burgess with a specific intention: to represent people of different races, ages, body shapes, abilities, and gender expressions in a way that feels genuine rather than token. Rather than renaming the court cards for neutrality, Burgess kept the traditional titles and let the imagery do the work of expanding their meaning. In this deck, a nonbinary person can hold the title of King and a cisgender man can embody the Queen, opening up the entire structure to new ways of thinking about gender and identity.
Charlie Claire Burgess is a queer and nonbinary tarot practitioner, writer, illustrator, and deck creator based in the Pacific Northwest. They began reading tarot as a teenager but found a deeper practice in their late twenties, when the cards played a significant role in helping them understand their own identity. They run the small business The Word Witch Tarot and have authored the book RADICAL TAROT, published by Hay House.
