The Tarot Steinberger traces its origins to Germany around 1820, named for the manufacturer who printed it using the exacting technique of metal engraving combined with colored mask painting. The result is a deck with a refined, almost aristocratic appearance that reflects the intellectual and cultural climate of early nineteenth-century Germany. Rather than following the southern European Arcana tradition, this deck uses classical and contemporary mythology to populate its 21 trump cards, drawing on the moral and cultural preoccupations of the Romantic era.
This limited-edition numbered deck is part of Lo Scarabeo's Anima Antiqua series, which reproduces decks from significant private and museum collections. The 54 cards, which use French suits of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades along with a Fool card, come in a deluxe box on premium card stock. Only 2,999 copies were produced.
