Alejandro R Rozan spent years studying the visual history of the Tarot de Marseille before creating the Tarot des Ambiguites, using the Nicolas Conver deck as his primary graphic reference but deliberately reinventing the narrative within each card. He drew the linework by hand using a fountain pen to capture the quality of woodcut printing, then colored the cards digitally using a palette drawn from samples of actual historical Marseille decks. The result respects the proportions and structure of the Conver originals while telling an entirely new story. Rather than a composite of historical sources, this is an original work that challenges readers to find fresh meanings in familiar images.
Alejandro R Rozan is a Cuban artist based in the United States whose work focuses on the arcane symbolism of the tarot world. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Ciego de Avila and works in watercolor, pencil, pen, and digital media. His encounter with the Tarot de Marseille as a child sparked a lifelong fascination that led to years of historical research and ultimately to this deck, created in collaboration with Steven Bright and Artisan Tarot. His artwork has appeared in publications including the Esotoracle and Azoth.
