Brian Williams, a scholar of Italian Renaissance art and classical mythology, built this deck as a genuine conversation between tarot and the culture that first nurtured the tradition. The 22 Major Arcana are populated by Olympian deities and demigods, each identified by both their Greek and Roman names in the accompanying booklet. The four Minor Arcana suits are organized around classical myth cycles: Achilles for Swords, Hercules for Staves, Cupid and Psyche for Cups, and Persephone for Coins. The great cities of Renaissance Italy are represented in the court cards, and the card backs feature a mandala that draws together all four suits and elements into a single unified design.
